What To Expect
Annual wellness exams are simple, straightforward appointments that occur in three major steps: the interview, the physical exam and the lab.
The Interview
The interview portion of an annual wellness exam refers to the initial conversation between you and Dr. Frederick, where she will review your medical history and ask you questions about your medications, home life and more. At this time, Dr. Frederick will also allow you to ask any questions you may have.
While each patient will have different questions and concerns, some standard questions you can ask include:
Am I caught up on my immunizations?
Am I at a healthy weight?
What are some tips you have to maintain a healthy weight?
Do I need to make any changes to my medications?
Am I getting enough sleep?
The Physical Exam
Following this initial conversation with Dr. Debralee Frederick, she will conduct a physical exam to check your vital signs and determine whether anything looks abnormal. The exam includes:
Measuring blood pressure, body temperature and heart rate
Listening to your heartbeat to screen for irregularities
Monitoring your lung function
Head and neck exam to check your ears, nose, sinuses, lymph nodes and thyroid
The Lab
Depending on the results of your physical exam and your specific concerns, Dr. Frederick may recommend blood work. Blood samples can be collected by the Hibiscus Medical team and sent for analysis at a third-party lab such as Labcorp or Quest.
Lab work uses urinalysis and/or blood tests to analyze the following:
Lipid count
Blood glucose
Blood count
Presence of sexually-transmitted infections
Signs of heart disease, cancer and more
Why Preventative Care
Is Important
Annual wellness exams allow Dr. Frederick to see how your mental health, physical health and environment all contribute to your overall well-being. Additionally, by having regular, physical exams with Dr. Frederick, she can diagnose any serious illnesses or complications early on and act swiftly to create a comprehensive treatment plan. The earlier these illnesses are discovered and diagnosed, the better chance you have of making a full recovery or successfully managing your symptoms.
