Acute Illnesses We Treat

Most acute illnesses develop quickly, with the body displaying symptoms just days after the initial exposure. Examples of acute illnesses include:

  • Common cold

  • Flu

  • Strep throat

  • Sinus infection

  • Upper respiratory infection

  • Bronchitis

  • A gastrointestinal illness (often called “stomach flu”)

Acute illnesses are usually easy to treat, and with medication and/or symptom management, go away after a couple of weeks. During your sick visits with Dr. Frederick, she will have you describe your symptoms, check your vital signs (body temperature, blood pressure, etc.) and if necessary, run a few, simple tests in order to diagnose your condition. Once diagnosed, Dr. Frederick will prescribe any necessary medications and advise you on how to best manage your symptoms for a quick and comfortable recovery.

Managing Symptoms of Acute Illnesses

Many acute illnesses require medication to treat, while others will go away on their own after a couple of weeks. Regardless of the illness type, there are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms and make yourself more comfortable during the healing process. These steps include:

Drinking water or a beverage with electrolytes can prevent dehydration and alleviate congestion.

Taking medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can reduce fevers and ease aches and pains.

Sleep is often the best medicine for acute illnesses. Do not perform any strenuous activities and be sure to get plenty of sleep.

Drinking warm beverages such as tea, water or broth can alleviate throat discomfort.

Cold & flu medications, decongestants or cough syrup can all ease discomfort caused by the cold, flu or other upper-respiratory infections.

If you are taking medications as directed and using the above methods to manage your symptoms and are still not feeling any better, call the Hibiscus Medical team in Washington, D.C. at 202-350-1546 or schedule an appointment on our website. This can be a sign of a secondary infection stemming from your initial acute illness, such as pneumonia, an ear infection or bronchitis, and may require further medication or treatment.
