annual physicalPhysical examinations are important appointments you should schedule annually with your primary care physician. Sometimes a physical can seem intimidating, but they’re really nothing more than a simple check of your overall health. They’re also a great opportunity for you to talk to your physician about any concerns you may have.

For those of you who want to get the most out of your visit, here are a few tips on how to prepare for your annual physical:

  • First, schedule an appointment for your physical with your primary care physician (PCP). If you don’t already have a PCP, call your health insurance company for a list of providers in your area.
  • When making your appointment, be sure to ask if you’ll need to fast before your physical. Most folks won’t have to, but those with certain health conditions may need to, especially if your doctor plans to have some labs taken when you come in.
  • You’ll want to put together a list of any medications you’re taking (including herbal supplements), as well as a list of any symptoms you’ve been experiencing.
  • If you’ve had any relevant medical tests done recently, be sure to bring in the results. Additionally, if you’ve seen any other medical professionals in the past, bring their names and phone numbers with you. Your PCP will need this info to coordinate your care.
  • Be sure to dress comfortably. Your annual physical isn’t something you’ll want to do on your lunch break. Try to wear loose-fitting clothes and minimal makeup and jewelry. You’ll want to make it as easy as possible for your doctor to examine you fully.
  • Last but not least, no matter how bashful you are, don’t avoid any topics. People tend not to speak up about things like urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and even domestic violence. It’s your doctor’s job to help keep you healthy and won’t find your symptoms embarrassing – even if you do.

Provided you prepare beforehand, you’ll be well-equipped to get the most out of your appointment. If you have any additional questions, please feel free contact us at any time.
